Advanced Mates & Motion

SOLIDWORKS advanced mate types: gear, rack-pinion, cam, slot, path, and limit mates for mechanical motion simulation.

Definition & Context

Beyond standard mates (Coincident, Parallel, Perpendicular, Tangent, Concentric, Distance, Angle), SOLIDWORKS provides advanced mates that define mechanical relationships: Gear (ratio-linked rotation), Rack-Pinion (linear-to-rotational), Cam (follower traces cam profile), Slot (pin-in-slot travel), Path (component follows 3D curve), Linear/Linear Coupler (proportional movement), and Limit Mates (distance/angle min-max).

Mechanical mates enable motion simulation without Motion Study: drag a gear and its mating gear counter-rotates at the defined ratio. Limit mates define travel stops — a slider that can move 0-150mm. Width mate centers a component between two parallel faces. Symmetry mate mirrors position across a reference plane.

Mate references (published on part features) auto-apply mates during insertion: drop a bolt into a hole and coincident + concentric mates apply automatically. SmartMates drag-and-drop creates mates by proximity detection.

Why It Matters

Advanced mates are what turn a static SOLIDWORKS assembly into a working mechanism — Gear, Rack-Pinion, Cam, Slot, and Path mates capture real kinematic relationships, so a design can be checked for motion, interference, and range of travel before anything is built.

Limit and coupler mates also let a single input drive several components, which is how you validate linkages virtually. Getting these right early avoids discovering binding or collisions only after parts are manufactured.

Best Practices

  • Use Gear mates with correct tooth ratios for mechanism visualization — more accurate than rotating manually for interference checks
  • Apply Limit mates to all linear actuators and hinges to prevent physically impossible travel in mechanism studies
  • Publish Mate References on standard parts (fasteners, bearings, connectors) to enable one-click assembly insertion
  • Use Width mates for components that must stay centered (drawer slides, linear bearings) regardless of housing dimension changes
  • Combine Path mate with Tangent mate for cam-follower mechanisms that maintain surface contact along arbitrary profiles

Common Pitfalls

  • Gear mates only link rotation — they don't enforce center-distance or mesh interference; validate with Contact in Motion Analysis
  • Cam mates with sharp profile corners cause solver instability — add fillets to cam profiles for smooth follower contact
  • Over-mating assemblies causes over-defined warnings; use minimum mates to fully position components (6 DOF reduced to 0)
  • SmartMates can create unintended mate types — always verify the mate type in the PropertyManager after quick-drag insertion
