Composite Positional Tolerancing & Pattern Control
In-depth guide to composite position tolerance frames per ASME Y14.5. Decouple pattern-locating tolerance (PLTZF) from feature-relating tolerance (FRTZF).
1. Definition & Engineering Significance
Composite Positional Tolerancing, represented by a single position symbol spanning two or more horizontal tolerance compartments in a Feature Control Frame, is one of the most powerful tolerancing tools in ASME Y14.5. It decouples the large location tolerance of a pattern of features relative to the overall part boundaries from the much tighter location and orientation tolerances required between the individual features within that pattern.
2. Technical Architecture & Key Parameters
- Pattern-Locating Tolerance Zone Framework (PLTZF): The upper tier in the composite frame. Defines the larger location tolerance zone of the overall pattern relative to external primary, secondary, and tertiary datums.
- Feature-Relating Tolerance Zone Framework (FRTZF): The lower tier in the composite frame. Defines the tighter tolerance zone governing feature-to-feature spacing and orientation within the pattern. Repeats datums only for orientation control.
- Single Symbol Rule: A true composite tolerance shares a single position characteristic symbol on the left across multiple rows. If each row has its own position symbol, it represents Two Single-Segment tolerances rather than composite.
- Cost Reduction Impact: Permits economical relaxed tolerances (e.g., $\varnothing 1.5$ mm) for mounting holes relative to rough part edges while maintaining strict precision (e.g., $\varnothing 0.2$ mm) for mating circuit board standoffs.
3. Industry Best Practices & Failure Modes
Consider a 16-hole bolt circle on a large pump cover. If an engineer specifies a single tight positional tolerance of $\varnothing 0.1$ mm to Datum A, B, and C, the machinist must locate the entire pattern with extreme precision relative to the rough cast outer flange, causing soaring scrap rates. In reality, the pump doesn't care if the whole pattern shifts 1.0mm; it only requires that the 16 holes align precisely to each other and perpendicular to the face.
4. Production Governance & Standard Protocols
Composite tolerancing solves this dilemma elegantly. By assigning PLTZF $\varnothing 1.0$ mm [A|B|C] and FRTZF $\varnothing 0.15$ mm [A], both manufacturing feasibility and functional assembly requirements are met at minimum production cost.
