Mold Tools
SOLIDWORKS mold design tools for core/cavity extraction, parting lines, draft analysis, and injection mold layout.
Definition & Context
The SOLIDWORKS Mold Tools workflow builds core and cavity from a part: scale for shrinkage, apply and analyze draft, create parting lines and shut-off surfaces, generate parting surfaces, then use Tooling Split to extract core and cavity blocks. Draft Analysis and Undercut Detection guide the process.
It is a surfacing-based toolset that assumes a solid part and a chosen pull direction; side-cores and lifters are modeled manually. It produces the tooling solids, not a full moldbase (which comes from libraries or add-ins).
Why It Matters
Mold Tools let a designer derive core/cavity directly from the part, so shrinkage, draft, and parting decisions are validated on the real geometry before cutting steel.
Catching insufficient draft or undercuts here — not at the toolmaker — is where the real cost savings are.
Best Practices
- Run Draft Analysis and set the pull direction before building parting geometry
- Apply the correct shrinkage scale factor for the resin
- Verify parting lines and shut-off surfaces are complete before Tooling Split
- Address undercuts (side cores/lifters) deliberately rather than ignoring them
Common Pitfalls
- Insufficient draft discovered only after the tool is cut
- Incomplete parting/shut-off surfaces causing Tooling Split to fail
- Forgetting shrinkage scaling, so molded parts come out undersized

Common Failure Scenarios & Troubleshooting
| Failure / Geometric Issue | Root Cause & Mitigation Strategy |
|---|---|
| Sketch breaks or flips geometry when adjusting dimensions | Sketch was under-constrained. Always apply geometric constraints (tangency, horizontal/vertical) before adding driving numerical dimensions. |
| Shell or Fillet feature fails on complex curved topology | Curvature radius is tighter than fillet radius or minimum wall thickness. Inspect surface curvature using Zebra stripes and eliminate zero-radius sharp corners. |
| Assembly performance severely lags during rotation | Large assembly mode was disabled. Suppress non-essential cosmetic features (threads, knurls) and use lightweight component representations. |
